As a professional, the challenge of writing and publishing consistently is a huge conundrum. While publishing an article, landing page, or a basic social media post, if there are any errors in the text, it will lower credibility amongst your target audience.
As a person who runs a blog and a digital marketing company, putting forward quality content with no grammatical or spelling mistakes is my utmost requirement. However, due to my tight schedule and the plethora of rules that come with the English language, it is sometimes difficult to pinpoint and find any issues in the text. I often catch errors during the editing process; however, I am only human and prone to make mistakes.
This is where grammar-checking tools come in. And two tools that I really like for their advanced grammar-checking capabilities are QuillBot and Grammarly. In this article, I will compare both the tools and help you decide which you can use to edit your write-up.
What is QuillBot?
QuillBot is a powerful AI writing tool with excellent paraphrasing capabilities. It uses cutting-edge NLP techniques, allowing users to write better and find new phrases.
In addition to a paraphrasing tool, QuillBot has several features that easily assist you with your writing, which include summarizer, grammar checker, plagiarism checker, citation generation, and AI content generation. It was founded by Rohan Gupta in 2017, based on his philosophy to focus on what you write and not know how you should write it.
QuillBot has an intuitive user interface, multiple writing modes with thesaurus support, and seamless integrations with popular platforms. The tool is ideal for students, writers, and professionals who are looking to simplify complex ideas or avoid plagiarism. The QuillBot app can be accessed via a web browser and add-ons for tools like Word, Chrome, and Google Docs.
- Excellent paraphrasing capabilities
- Beginner-friendly interface
- Its Co-Writer tool allows you to efficiently research, rewrite, and edit your content in a single tool
- Great writing and editing tools from a single subscription
- Create citations from any source with ease
- Integrates with an array of websites and apps
- Restricted plagiarism detector
- Character limitations on its free as well as paid plans
- Availability of only 2 writing modes
- Doesn’t offer a mobile or desktop app
What is Grammarly?
Grammarly is a popular online writing assistant designed for Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android devices. The tool is renowned for its ability to efficiently modify, correct, or proofread your content. Grammarly was launched in 2009 by Brad Hoover to give you access to real-time proofing and editing to give you writing suggestions as you write.

Grammarly is more than your standard grammar or spelling checker; it helps you make suggestions to improve the clarity of your text and engagement, which is crucial for writers. It has over 300 million users with over 30,000 teams, meaning that they are doing something right. The app shows you an overall score on the top corner that helps rate your work better. Further, you get an in-depth analysis of your sentence structure, reading time, and speaking time. This feature is very helpful for me as a video creator, as I can see how long it will take you to read the script.
One major reason I really like Grammarly is its advanced cross-platform features. You always don’t have to copy or paste your text into the app to edit content; you simply have to install its extension and edit it on the go.
- Simple user interface
- Fast and efficient grammar and spell checker
- Supports unlimited plagiarism checks
- Customizable settings
- Premium writing style guide
- Good tone detection
- Multiple colors for your errors, making you understand your mistakes
- Highly secure
- Slightly expensive
- Only supports the English language
- Unexpected bugs on some issues
Who are QuillBot and Grammarly For?
Before I compare the features and differentiate both the apps, I’ll explain who these tools are for.
- Bloggers and Freelance Writers
If your copy has any spelling errors or grammatical errors that will affect the relationship with your readers, then both tools use their advanced AI features to reduce the number of mistakes. As a freelance writer, I use them to improve the clarity of writing, engage with my audience, and reduce the time that I would normally spend editing.
- Academics and Essayists
QuillBot and Grammarly are great tools for academics and essayists as they allow users to generate citations for an array of styles, which include Chicago, MLA, and Harvard. They also have plagiarism checkers that allow you to test whether the content is original or has some form of plagiarism.
- Content marketers
A major part of content marketing for me is to build profitable relationships with my readers and followers through my written content. It involves everything from writing for landing pages, blog posts, social media ads, and emails for your target audience.
If I am not able to structure my sentences properly or communicate my value, then nobody will buy my products, regardless of how unique they are.
Luckily, I can paste the content into Grammarly, and it will spot any issues in it. Here, it will help me with my deliverability, readability, and engagement in my writing. This ensures that I can communicate my value to my audience due to my concise writing.
The Premium plan of QuillBot allows you to easily copy and paste your work to efficiently optimize your SEO and paraphrase sentences that may be difficult to read.
- Remote workers
I am constantly on the move and require a tool that can help me compose emails ranging from a few sentences to several paragraphs. If I didn’t have a software that could help me with writing or paraphrasing my work, then I can easily edit the content, which saves me valuable time.
- Authors
Finally, the tools are ideal for authors who need to develop a storyline and characters to grab their reader’s attention. Both these tools have AI writing assistants that allow them to brainstorm ideas if they run into any hurdles on the way. Further, it can help them with editing, which is a tedious part of publishing a book.
Nearly all authors have editors to proofread their work. With Grammarly and QuillBot, you can catch any spelling or formatting errors instead of sending them to the editor.
QuillBot vs Grammarly
1. Ease of Use
One of the most vital aspects for me is the ease of use that I get with any app, and it is no different when comparing both tools. They claim that they have a simple interface, but how do they really compare?
QuillBot
QuillBot offers an intuitive, simple interface, having little to no learning curve. A good thing I like about the web editor of QuillBot is that you don’t have to sign up or log in to use the tool. If you are planning to use a free version, then you can head over to their website, and you’ll get access to its editor.
You simply have to paste your content in the editor, and QuillBot will underline your errors in red color. It is important to note that, unlike Grammarly, it doesn’t separate errors in different colors. This may sometimes be confusing to understand which error it is unless you tap on the error. Further, the tool doesn’t offer an explanation for your errors. Instead, it only allows you to see the necessary changes.
As you can see in the image above, there are multiple errors in the text. If you want to save time, you can fix all the errors by clicking on Fix All Errors. This will help make instant corrections within a few options that Grammarly lacks. You also have the ability to paraphrase your text or download the corrected content at the click of a button.
An area that I found missing is its settings and customization options. There is no option to customize your settings, and the suggestions are set by default from QuillBot.
QuillBot has the option to download the extension from Chrome or Word, and it will be automatically embedded into these platforms and tools that you are using.
Grammarly
Grammarly has a simple interface and is easy to use, which helps reduce friction, which is why it is a viable choice for several users. From the sign-up process to installing it to your browser, it will take a few seconds, and you are good to go.
Once you have signed up, you will be directed to its dashboard. The dashboard is a place where your checked documents will be stored. You don’t have to worry, as your content is secure and protected.
If you look at the dashboard, you can see it has a simple design, and all its options can be easily navigated without much hassle. To check your content, you simply have to tap on the New option, and it will open the Grammarly editor. From there, you can paste your content or directly add your document.
Grammarly will underline your errors in different colors- red, blue, green, and purple. Each color denotes different error types, for example, red depicts spelling and grammar errors, blue is for clarity, purple is for delivery and tone, and green is for clarity. This is something I like about Grammarly, compared to other writing assistants. You will get detailed explanations of any errors, helping you better understand why you are wrong. Further, you can tap on the corrections and accept changes, which will automatically apply.
If you are looking for customizable settings, simply click on the Goals option on the right-hand side of your screen. Here, you can change its settings and give instructions to Grammarly to accordingly check your content.
The interface is similar in other places, including mobile and desktop applications. An area that I really like about Grammarly is how easy it is to use with other platforms.
Finally, you can check the overall score of your content on the left side. The score given by Grammarly allows you to understand what your content is looking for and where you can improve it.
A tip I would recommend to users is that if your content has any pictures, I would ask you to upload your content via document rather than directly pasting it. If you paste your content directly, it will remove any pictures and tables while affecting your formatting.
Overall, I can say that the interface of Grammarly is quite simple and modern, requiring zero expertise or a learning curve.
Verdict
QuillBot and Grammarly have a simple interface and are easy to use with minimal settings. However, Grammarly is packed with more features that give me more itineraries to work with while writing my content.
2. Grammar Checker
QuillBot and Grammarly claim that they are two of the best AI-powered grammar checkers; however, which tool will actually have the best results among them? Let us test them out.
QuillBot
The Grammar Checker tool of QuillBot is powerful and allows you to correct any inaccuracies that might have occurred throughout the Paraphraser process. Powered by AI, the tool is very useful for finding the common ways of using that style of grammar.
The utility functions of the checker are the same as other grammar-checking tools in the market. It basically helps correct grammatical errors, punctuation, and typographical mistakes.
Spellings may seem simple, but the English language has so many rules that may be hard to remember. Even spelling correction tools don’t catch all these issues. QuillBot will correct misspelled and misused words, so you don’t have to worry about any pesky rules.
You can create a smooth, sleek, and simple workflow in the user-friendly interface of the tool. This lets you save time, energy, and unnecessary heading with your arsenal of helpful products.
The tool doesn’t have any effect on the outcome that is obtained using the paraphraser mode. The Grammar Checker will also be used as a word editing environment, complete with multiple headings and other styling options. What is more, is that there is a button which allows you to correct all your mistakes simultaneously. This is great as it helps save a significant amount of time.
QuillBot ensures that your workflow is streamlined, so it has rolled several tools in its Grammar Checker. It will check the grammar of sentences from the beginning to the end of any project that you are working on in a simple click, ensuring your work is free from errors.
The background of every writer is different; some learn through writing courses, while others focus on the trial-and-error method. The Grammar Checker of QuillBot will flag mistakes in your writing and will bring them visually to your attention. This helps you learn and grow into a better writer.
Select the download button, and you can save your work on the MS Word document. You don’t need a premium subscription to use the function, and it is entirely free of cost. The Grammar Checker supports American, Canadian, Australian, British, and English styles. It is available to fix grammatical mistakes everywhere online through browser plugins or web apps.
However, the Grammar Checker of QuillBot is not as intuitive to use as Grammarly. This being said QuillBot is accurate, and if you are already paying for the other tools of the platform, then it is a useful addition and helps academics fix any errors before submitting it for publication.
Grammarly
Grammarly’s core feature is its grammar checker. Its grammar checker lets you efficiently fix standard mistakes or punctuation errors using its free plan. However, you will get access to advanced grammar-checking capability with the Premium plans. You will get a detailed explanation of your flagged grammatical errors, while also offering examples. This is a great way to improve your writing skills.
The tool offers real-time suggestions and necessary guidelines to correct these mistakes. From the simplest errors to complex issues, you will get the correct suggestions for your business.
The correctness tab of Grammarly will display your grammatical errors, spelling mistakes, or other errors which are in your text or document. You can check the suggested changes or directly accept them by clicking on edit the error, and the document will be updated.
If you want to learn the logic of the suggestion, you have the option to click on the Learn More button. This helps you better understand the meaning and significance and get examples to find the correct usage parameter. The grammar checker feature is something that drew me towards Grammarly.
Verdict
Grammarly’s core feature is its grammar checker, and it is dedicated to making your content free from any errors. The tool has a better grammar-checking tool when you compare it to the QuillBot grammar checker. Apart from this, Grammarly is more versatile and accurate comparatively.
3. Paraphrasing
Paraphrasing is a robust feature that is handy for repurposing my content for other platforms. Let us check what both these tools have to offer when you compare their paraphrasing functionality.
QuillBot
The most appealing feature of QuillBot is the paraphrase tool of the software. The feature does precisely what the name implies; it rewrites the sentences and paragraphs. It basically helps you restructure, reorganize, or completely alter sentences without compromising the original text. This is particularly good to avoid plagiarism checkers if you think that is the issue. To use the paraphrasing tool, you simply have to paste the content and rephrase it in the left textbox.
In my experience of testing the tool, it performs a decent job of paraphrasing short paragraphs or texts, especially if you want to give it a brief edit. There might be a few sentences that may sound confusing.
It also comes with multiple speech styles that you can select from and adapt your writing modes. Based on the QuillBot mode, you can choose the AI mode that will adjust the material, and you’ll get the desired outcome that will appear on the right. Some styles it has are
- Standard mode
- Fluency mode
- Formal mode
- Simple mode
- Creative mode
- Expand mode
- Shorten mode
Only the first two modes are available with the free plan. To have access to all the modes, you’ll need to get their premium version. Some of the modes have a synonyms bar that tells QuillBot how much you need to change the text. It will tell you whether you are making fewer changes or more changes. Each of the modes has a distinct focus on the text in which it will operate.
However, you have the ability to modify the degree of the change seen in all the modes except the Simple mode. This is a useful feature that limits the number of modifications the AI wants to make in the text.
Grammarly
Grammarly doesn’t have a dedicated paraphrasing tool. However, as its main focus is on grammar checking, it performs some basic paraphrasing suggestions for wordy sentences.
The feature allows you to change your sentence into active voice in case you have written in a passive voice and also reduces your redundancy. However, currently, they don’t have a dedicated feature that allows you to paraphrase sentences, which is a bit disappointing.
Verdict
QuillBot is primarily known for its paraphrasing tools. Grammarly doesn’t specifically have a paraphrasing feature, so QuillBot is a clear winner in this section.
4. Plagiarism Checker
Checking plagiarism in every content I write is important. While there are several plagiarism checkers, I prefer to have everything on a single platform. I have tested the accuracy of both QuillBot and Grammarly plagiarism detection features to find whether they are worth it.
QuillBot
QuillBot has a Plagiarism Checker that helps academics and essayists who want to check the uniqueness of the content. Users have to simply paste in or upload the text, and the checker will scan through it in a few minutes. It will then present a report indicating whether the text is directly or indirectly plagiarized.
The feature is available only to premium users, and they can scan up to 20 pages per month for over 100 languages. However, you can pay more to get access to more pages to check its plagiarism. The uploaded file can be in a textual or non-textual format that includes HTML, TXT, CSV, PDF, DOCX, PPT, ODP, XLS, and other file types.
If the content contains any piece of plagiarised information that is published in books, research papers, news sources, academic papers, or the web, then the tool will determine if you failed to give proper authorship to that content. You can quickly and accurately get a review of all the instances with a plagiarism score and report. Here, you get clear and actionable feedback on your document or if they are missing proper citations.
QuillBot is committed to promoting and protecting academic integrity. The Plagiarism Checker and guides are built to help educate students about the best practices to avoid any unintentional plagiarism.
However, you need to know that QuillBot doesn’t have a plagiarism checker on its free plan, and its premium plan is limited in this aspect. For example, on its paid plans, you are restricted to checking 20 pages each month, each page having a maximum of 250 words. This is quite expensive if you are a working professional or a writer who regularly has to check your content.
Grammarly
Grammarly has a powerful plagiarism checker that easily scans your text with billions of web pages on the web. The tool points you directly to the part that is plagiarised alongside its source. You can check the percentage of text that matches with the content on the web, which you have the option to click on, and it will direct you to the said link.
You get access to the plagiarism checker on its free version, but it is limited to 1000 characters. However, on its paid plans, you get access to unlimited plagiarism checks, and you also get to know whether the text is plagiarised without incurring any extra charge.
If you are reading a lot with a good memory, then you’ll be in grave danger of accidentally plagiarising your content. This is why the plagiarism checker of Grammarly allows you to better identify plagiarism in your content.
It is important to note that the plagiarism detector of Grammarly is not 100% accurate or reliable. However, it is great to efficiently run quick checks for your content.
Verdict
QuillBot and Grammarly have excellent plagiarism detection. The plagiarism checker of Grammarly is a pocket-friendly option that is ideal for students or working professionals. However, the plagiarism checker of QuillBot is well-suited for academic content and students.
5. Citation Generator
A citation generator is a great tool that allows you to automate your process of finding, annotating, and formatting your references, saving you valuable time and effort. Grammarly and QuillBot offer great citation generators, but which is better?
QuillBot
The QuillBot Citation Generator is another popular tool designed for essayists and academics. The tool makes it simple for users to construct citation that includes a link or a book title.
After you enter the URL or title, the program will automatically collect the necessary information on the page. This includes the title, authors’ names, date the page was published. If the information requested is not available, then the system will prompt you to manually enter the information.
Once you finish, click on Save Citation, where the QuillBot tool will generate a complete citation in the format that you have specified. This function is compatible with APA, MLA, and Chicago formatting styles. Further, it lets you make several citations and copies of the results that are generated. It is also possible to export it all at the same time by downloading it as an MS Word document.
Grammarly
Grammarly has a versatile citation tool that will help you confidentially submit your research. The citation tool is highly versatile and is available on its paid and free plans. This is great for me as I can easily auto-generate your citations for your research paper, bibliography, or cited page.
Its auto-citation feature is even available on its browser extension. If you get onto a compatible source website, you will get a citation button that appears on the bottom-left corner of the screen. Simply click on the button, and it will offer a full citation for your in-text citation for the source that you are viewing. You get different style guides, which you can switch from APA, MLA, and Chicago using its dropdown menu.
On its premium plan, users get premium suggestions for in-text citing text. Here, Grammarly will flag any errors in citations that you may have missed so you can comply with but avoid any accidental plagiarism.
Verdict
QuillBot and Grammarly offer great in-text citation features, which are handy for academics, essayists, and others who require the feature. This not only saves you time but also resources you would otherwise have spent. However, there is no clear winner and both are nearly similar in this aspect.
6. AI Content Creation
For me as a writer, I sometimes run into writer’s block, and to overcome this, I need a tool that can help generate outlines from which I can start my writing process. Let us see what both tools offer.
QuillBot
The Suggest Text feature of QuillBot lets you generate content right from scratch. The tool does an excellent job of suggesting and writing content. Its AI content creation feature works by suggesting the next paragraph you can incorporate into your writing.
The tool asks you to constantly input intel from the user, and you can write a sentence or two by yourself before you generate your next content suggestion. This is not very convenient if you want to write a complete essay or article without inputting any information yourself.
Grammarly
Grammarly allows users to generate content by simply heading over to the Generative AI section on the right side of the screen. Here, you have the ability to add a prompt to generate content for your venture. It also offers some ideas and suggestions you can use while generating your content.
You can easily set the tone, which can be customized to sound personable, confident, empathetic, engaging, witty, or direct. Further, you have the option to describe your profession while also having the ability to write it in the type of language you would prefer.
Once you are all set, simply press enter, and the tool will generate your text. It is important to note that you may have to tinker with the prompt a few times before you get the text. This can be tiring for some individuals, but overall, it offers a reliable solution.
Verdict
QuillBot and Grammarly have excellent AI content generation features. However, Grammarly has a slight edge due to its tone personalization and other functionality.
7. Pricing
QuillBot and Grammarly come with free versions; however, they also have their premium versions. Let us understand the pricing of the paid versions to understand which is affordable.
QuillBot
QuillBot has three premium plans, which give you access to a plagiarism checker, tone adjuster, multiple modes, synonyms, and more. The three plans at the time of writing are its Monthly plan ($9.95 per month), Semi-Annual plan ($6.66 per month), and Annual plan ($4.17 per month).
Grammarly
Grammarly also comes with three plans, which give you access to advanced grammar corrections, tone adjustments, plagiarism checker, and more. At the time of writing, the plans are Monthly plan ($30 per month), Quarterly plan ($20 per month), and Annual plan ($12 per month).

Verdict
QuillBot is cheaper; however, it has limitations on the features it offers, and you can only scan 20 pages, while with Grammarly, you can check unlimited text.
8. Extensions and Applications
Besides an online editor, having extensions and applications allows you to save valuable time. In case you are using other websites, you can use an extension of your writing tool to save time that you would spend manually checking your content. Let’s see the extensions and applications of them both.
QuillBot
QuillBot has its Chrome extension, which will be embedded in several tools and websites. You can also download its extension on Microsoft Word, which allows you to use it when you are writing in Word. However, QuillBot doesn’t have an application on desktops and phones, similar to Grammarly.
Grammarly
Grammarly is liked by its users for how easy it is to use anywhere. You can use its Chrome extension, which, when enabled, will be embedded on websites that you are using. For example, if you are using Word, you can use it inside. The same is the case of websites like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and more.
It offers a mobile application for iOS and Android devices. You can also add a Grammarly keyboard to your phone. Further, you can download the application on your desktop that will let you use Grammarly on other applications.
Verdict
Grammarly is more widely available and accessible compared to QuillBot. You can download the Grammarly app on desktop and mobile application, which is missing with QuillBot.
Testing Criteria
When I was writing this article, I checked and used the free and paid versions of QuillBot and Grammarly. During this time, I looked at the criteria below to judge whether these tools are good options for students or essayists.
- Flexibility
- Accuracy
- Affordability
Both the tools meet the criteria since most of the changes it suggests are correct and accurate. They also provide you assistance with readability by suggesting how you can move around to increase its clarity.
In terms of their affordability, you won’t break the bank on both of these tools even though you are starting out as a freelance writer. Further, they offer great flexibility because they have SEO tools and plagiarism checkers.
QuillBot vs Grammarly: Which is the Winner?
I have been using QuillBot and Grammarly since I started my career as a writer, and it has helped me not only save money but my time. Using the tools has helped me improve my writing quality instantly. Now, I have complete confidence in my writing skills as I know that I avoid any errors that I once made.
Although the tools won’t replace a human editor, they help streamline my editing process. Both the writing assistants are great; however, QuillBot is the cheapest of the two but has fewer features. It is beginner-friendly and great for paraphrasing content, which is ideal for academics or students.
Grammarly Premium has advanced grammar-checking capabilities that allow you to efficiently edit your work and check for plagiarism in your content. Its AI content generator is an outstanding addition. The tool is great if you are working with other writers and want to check for any missing citations or plagiarism. I also like its free version, even though its reports may be limited.
