SEMrush Review

SEMrush transformed my SEO career. Almost 3 years ago, I signed up for the SEMrush free trial and typed a few of my competitors and my mind was blown away by one single fact;

In online marketing as in most things in life, results are governed by the Pareto principle which means that a tiny amount of effort generates the greatest amount of results.

How does this apply to online marketing & SEO?

Well, every single blog has a tiny number of articles bringing in the majority of their organic traffic.

And;

In turn, a tiny number of keywords bringing the majority of traffic to those particular articles.

Let me explain this with an example;

If I type “SEMrush review” into SEMrush as a keyword. I can see that the top 2 results are big websites (PCMag & Capterra) so I’m going to skip them.

The 3rd results is an article from abetterlemonadestand.com:

Now if I do the URL result of the SEMrush review from them I can see that the majority of the traffic is to the keywords “Semrush review” and “Semrush” so those are good keywords for me to target with this article.

However, let’s go a little deeper and check out the entire domain results for this domain:

According to SEMrush, this domain has over 270 pages indexed as of the time of writing. However, only 2 of their 270 blog posts bring in almost 50% of the traffic! Now if I was one of their competitors, I would invest extra hard and try and beat them on those keywords.

You can type any of your competitors’ domains below to get all their keyword and give this a whirl yourself.

Following the Pareto principle with content can help you generate more traffic and income with less work.

It was thanks to this principle and following this strategy that I grew my first travel blog to over 100k month;y organic visitors.

Organic Keyword & Domain Database

SEMrush has one of the largest keyword databases in the world. You can easily type in any keyword into SEMrush and you’ll get a ton of related keywords with their difficulty as well as volume. It’s great to find related keywords.

Their competitor’s analysis is great cause you can see all the keywords that your competition is ranks as I did in the intro so you know what to target in your niche.

You can also use advanced featured like “featured snippets” etc to find keywords worth targeting to improve your #0 positioning.

PPC and Advertising Research

You can also use SEMrush for your PPC and advertising by finding the keywords that your competition is targeting as well as having a preview of their ad copy so you can see the types of ads your competition is running and optimizing your ads based on that.

Display Advertising Tool

Semrush has a great display advertising tool that helps you get an overview of your competitors’ GDN strategies, analyze competitors’ display ads, find new publishers to target and also view display ads from different devices.

Backlinks

Personally, I find SEMrush tool lacking a little in terms of backlinks however, over the past few years they’ve been improving. However, their backlinks analysis is not yet on par with tools like Ahrefs and Majestic.

You can use SEMrush’s backlink analysis tool to conduct a deep link analysis, understand referring domains’ authority, check backlinks’ types, spot your links’ geolocation and so much more.

Technical SEO

In terms of Tech SEO, Semrush is the most in-depth compared to Ahrefs, Moz and the other all in one SEO tools.

SEMrush comes with a built-in Site Audit tool that’s pretty extensive and always growing. You can easily get an SEO Content Template for your keyword or topic. Their On-Page SEO Checker is one of the best SEO tools out there. The Log File Analyzer is great if you want to dive into the logs of your server (especially useful during a domain migration of huge site changes)

Project Management

SEMrush is a great tool for agencies with their project management tool. From site audit, rank tracking, and reporting (with your logo) SEMrush handles it all.

SEMrush Pro vs Guru vs Business

• SEMrush Pro: The SEMrush Pro plan is best suited for a beginner with a single website or running a very few sites.
• SEMrush Guru: The SEMrush guru plan is best suited for a SEO freelancer or a business that needed more than one people to use SEMrush.
• SEMrush Business: If you are big business running campaigns at scale and need multiple people using SEMrush than the Business plan is the best plan.

The most important difference between SEMrush Pro and Guru is the Historical data feature. The historical data feature of SEMrush Guru allows you to check the past data for any of your queries and urls. This is especially useful if you do any SEO audits for businesses and want to see their rankings from the past.

Best Semrush Alternatives

1. Ahrefs

The king of kings in backlink analysis! Ahrefs is the best alternative to Semrush if the price isn’t a concern and backlinks are your main priority eg, if you are doing mass outreach, a guest post-campaign, etc.

However, for most people reading this, Ahrefs is a little overboard in terms of functionality and the pricing as well! Ahrefs’s trial cost $7, while many of its competitors offer free trials.

Also, the cheapest plan starts at $99 month, i.e., which is over $1200 a year! That might be a little out of budget for most beginners which is why Mangools is a better choice for someone starting out!

2. Mangools

If you are looking for a budget alternative to Semrush, Mangools is definitely the best tool you’re going to find that’s the greatest value for the money.

The Mangools Suite is composed of 5 different SEO tools

• KwFinder: A keyword research tool that makes it easy to find low hanging fruit and low competition keywords
• SerpChecker: A SERP analysis tool that helps you find the weak spots of your competitors.
• SerpWatcher: A simple to use SERP and rank tracking tool that makes other complicated tools look like they’re from the 80s
• LinkMiner: A great backlink analysis tool with a huge backlink database.

Mangools is honestly the best tool for the first time blogger who finds the $100/month cost of Ahrefs to be too high. Also in my experience, the Mangools is actually better than SEMrush when it comes to backlinks.

And that’s not all! Link Miner uses the Majestic SEO API data which means you can get all the information such as Citation Flow and Trust Flow (Their SiteProfiler tools also gives you Domain Authority and Page Authority data from Moz) without you having to buy those tools!
