Artificial Intelligence has come in the news for the past few years. It is estimated that AI usage will grow substantially in the next few years. In this vast market, two of the most popular AI tools designed for writers are Grammarly and ChatGPT.
I have reviewed several AI tools in the past and have been working on the comparison between Grammarly vs ChatGPT for a while now. To offer a clear picture, I will compare both tools based on their interface, grammar checker, ability to generate content, plagiarism checker, and the accuracy of suggested content improvement.
This is a close fight; however, there is a clear winner. But can you take a guess? Let us look into it below.
Grammarly Overview
Grammarly has been my favorite writing tool ever since I started writing content professionally. It offers intuitive writing suggestions for users to help improve their writing, readability, and editing content. The platform was launched in 2009 by Brad Hover to help users be grammatically sound and has gained over 30 million users, which keeps growing each day.

Grammarly vs ChatGPT
1. User Interface
Grammarly and ChatGPT have a diversified user interface based on your requirements. Both tools are easy to use and are beginner-friendly, so anyone can use them. I like working with them both due to their ad-free, clutter-free, and purpose-based user interface.
Let us look at which one is easier to use out of them.
Grammarly
Grammarly has a simple interface and offers more than a single way you can use it. To start off, you have to paste your text, and Grammarly will highlight all the errors and offer suggestions to rectify them.
Towards the right side of the page on Grammarly, you get an assistant who will grade the text based on your set goals, correctness, Generative AI, engagement, clarity, style guide, and plagiarism.
On the bottom, there is a toolbar that allows you to bold, italicize, add headings, and underline alongside other text formatting tools.
Grammarly interface as an extension
Grammarly is available on a browser extension, as you can see the snippet of me using the tool on Google Docs.
When you are working live on Google Docs, Grammarly will pop up instant suggestions when you are using it. The right side will show the number of alerts that need to be corrected and offer suggestions to improve your content.
ChatGPT
To use ChatGPT, you need to provide a prompt, like generate content, proofread, or correct existing content after you copy and paste the article into the text box. Here is the snippet of the interface of ChatGPT.
On the left of the page, you will find the history of all the conversations you had with ChatGPT, the GPTs that are utilizing, and some other settings.
The bottom area is where you can share dialogues with ChatGPT and get your responses. Below is a short article I created and had a conversation with the Chatbot from OpenAI.
For every prompt that you have entered, you can stop it from generating, edit the prompt, and share feedback to the response offered by ChatGPT so it can learn and improve it in the future.
To get the best results, you will need frequent back-and-forth conversations, which is not ideal for every user. If you need to check grammar, you will need to ask ChatGPT to do it while sending the text.
Verdict
When you compare ChatGPT to Grammarly, it offers direct, live suggestions and improvements without requiring any additional prompting. I really like the flexibility that you get with Grammarly. Further, the way it paints bright red for any errors helps me see any errors clearly and rectify them without much hassle. This is why Grammarly is a clear winner in this section.
2. Grammar Checking
Grammar checking is a vital component required to generate quality content for your business. Both tools offer good grammar-checking capability, which we will look into below.
Grammarly
Grammar checking is the core feature of Grammarly that allows you to fix any mistakes or punctuation errors in the texts. If you are on its Premium plans, you get access to advanced grammar-checking, where you get an explanation of the flagged grammatical errors and are provided with a solution to the issue. This is very helpful if you want to improve your writing skills.
Grammarly offers real-time guidelines and suggestions to correct any mistakes. A simple example can be adding missing punctuation, misplaced apostrophes, or other common issues. The correctness tab of Grammarly will display your basic grammatical mistakes, spelling, and punctuation errors in the text or document.
If you want to make any changes as per your suggestions, you can click on edit, and it will be updated. In case you cannot find the logic behind the suggestion, you can click on the Learn More button. This helps you understand the meaning and significance and get examples to get the correct usage parameter.
ChatGPT
ChatGPT is a language model designed to generate responses to text inputs that you give, which is similar to humans. However, it does have some form of capability to check for grammar errors in your text.
Once you input the text, you can fix punctuation errors, and it will change your content accordingly. The grammar checker is available on its premium plans, which slightly limits it. Further, its level of accuracy and specificity is not on par with Grammarly and other grammar checkers, as it overlooks certain errors or issues.
Verdict
ChatGPT will send a corrected paragraph within a matter of seconds; however, there is no way of knowing where you made the mistakes while writing. It is also very limited in this section and is not the best in the market in this aspect.
Grammarly highlights the mistakes and offers ways to make your content sound confident and readable. You will be required to manually accept your errors and make changes. This will allow you to better know the errors or issues you have.
So, if you want a direct grammar checker without requiring you to do any heavy lifting, then ChatGPT can help you out. However, if you want to learn from your mistakes and improve as you go, then Grammarly is the tool for you. Overall, Grammarly is a winner in this section.
3. Generate Content
For content writers, authors, or users who are part of the writing ecosystem require help in generating content or getting cues to write content. Both tools allow you to efficiently generate content without much hassle. Let us understand what they have to offer.
To get a precise answer about which is better in content generation, I have generated similar content on both tools- “How to write a blog post”.
Grammarly
Grammarly allows users to generate content by simply heading over to the Generative AI section on the right side of the screen. Here, you have the ability to add a prompt to generate content for your venture. It also offers some ideas and suggestions you can use while generating your content.
You can easily set the tone- casual, neutral, or formal specification. The tone can be further customized whether you want it to sound personable, confident, empathetic, engaging, witty, or direct. Further, you have the option to describe your profession while also having the ability to write it in the type of language you would prefer.
Once you are all set, simply press enter, and the tool will generate your text. It is important to note that you may have to tinker with the prompt a few times before you get the text. This can be tiring for some individuals, but overall, it offers a reliable solution.
Going back to the response offered by Grammarly, it was precise and crisp offering a robust answer to my queries. Further, I had the option to shorten the content, make it more descriptive, simplify it, etc. You also have the option to in-text cite the content, as well as have the ability to acknowledge whether the content is generated using the AI of Grammarly.
ChatGPT
ChatGPT allows you to generate content quite swiftly without much hassle. You have to enter the text prompt on the keyboard, and it will understand and generate content efficiently. The tool allows you to leverage its powers to create content that sticks and resonates with your audience to drive up your engagement.
The content that is generated from ChatGPT is informative, engaging, and coherent. It is important to understand that the content generated using AI requires editing and proofreading to enhance the overall quality of the write-up.
The content that is generated from ChatGPT was good and informative, fitting all my requirements. Further, ChatGPT allows you to regenerate the content if you don’t like what is generated. You can also give feedback on the content whether you like it or not. Here, the tool will ask you what you don’t like about it, like whether you don’t like the style, content is not factually correct, etc. The generated content can be shared through different channels for other users to access it.
Verdict
Generating content with Grammarly took a while to generate a response; however, the response offered by the tool has more value and relevance compared to that offered by ChatGPT. Further, you get the option to edit the content using Grammarly, which is a great plus for users. This is why you can say that Grammarly is the winner in this section.
4. Plagiarism Checker
A key area that helps differentiate between Grammarly and ChatGPT is its plagiarism checker. Let us look at what both tools have to offer.
Grammarly
Grammarly has a good plagiarism checker that lets you see whether your content is plagiarized or unique. You get access to it on its free plan, but you don’t get to know which section has plagiarism. On the Premium plan, you get unlimited plagiarism checks, and you can check as much text as you want without incurring extra charges.
If you have plagiarised content, it will show on the right side of the screen, and you can click and analyze it separately. Here, you get the percentage of plagiarism of the text as well as the URL of the source.
ChatGPT
ChatGPT doesn’t have a plagiarism checker even on its Plus plan, which is very disappointing. When I asked ChatGPT to check for plagiarism, it showed the message as seen below.
Verdict
Grammarly is the clear winner in this section, as ChatGPT doesn’t offer a plagiarism checker. However, Grammarly may be unreliable for once, as it is slightly inconsistent.
5. Suggestions Accuracy
Accuracy offered by both tools is another area where you need to check before you decide to take the call and select the best tool among them. To check the accuracy and appropriateness of the suggestions, I have checked a paragraph in both tools.
Grammarly
Grammarly offers corrections and suggestions that make sense in some cases but may be different in others. This is something that is common with Grammarly and is one of its biggest flaws. The tool usually asks users to make changes to improve the readability and clarity and messes with the structure of the sentence.
ChatGPT
ChatGPT is confident with regard to the corrections and offers explanations for every problem in the texts. This is great as you can improve your article organically by understanding your errors.
Verdict
ChatGPT is a winner when it comes to Proofreading over Grammarly. This is because it offers explanations for the issues in your text and shows how you can improve it.
6. Pricing
Grammarly and ChatGPT have a free plan that allows you to access its features, which helps out writers who are starting out. Let us delve into the pricing of both tools.
Grammarly
Grammarly has 4 standard plans that you can choose from to check your writing to make it grammatically correct. They don’t offer a money-back policy but come with prorating of any fees for the subscription if it is terminated before the end of its terms.

The four plans offered by the tool include the Free plan, the Premium plan ($30 per month), which has a 7-day trial period, and its Business plan ($25 per seat each month). Further, it also offers Grammarly for Education, which offers useful versatile features. To know more about this plan, contact the team to get a quote on their offering.
ChatGPT
ChatGPT has 4 plans similar to Grammarly that you can select from to generate content for your venture. The subscription fee of the tool is non-refundable across all its plans.
The 4 plans at the time of writing are the Free plan, the Plus plan ($20 per user each month), the Team plan ($30 per user each month), and the Enterprise plan, which comes with its custom pricing and features.
Verdict
Grammarly and ChatGPT have reasonable plans that give users access to different features and functionality. The plans are more or less the same in terms of pricing; however, the features that you get with Grammarly far exceed those offered by ChatGPT.
7. Customer Support
The final parameter that we will check for both tools is their customer support. Let us understand what they offer when you compare this aspect.
Grammarly
The customer support offered by Grammarly helps resolve any issues users might be facing. Grammarly offers support through live chat and phone on its free plan. On top of this, you get chatbot and email support on its paid plans. All your queries are resolved within 24 hours by their team.
Grammarly also comes with a knowledge base that has informative articles that cover several aspects of the platform. You can get access to it in its Help Center.
ChatGPT
ChatGPT doesn’t have a dedicated support team to help resolve issues. So, the only way to get support is through its knowledge base, which has over 150 articles discussing any issues that you might face using the tool.
Verdict
Grammarly is the winner once again, as it has a great support team and a rich list of articles to help resolve any issues you might have while using the tool. ChatGPT is more of a straightforward tool and doesn’t require much help to get started with, so it only offers a knowledge base to resolve most customer queries.

Who Should Use ChatGPT?
ChatGPT has a diversified customer base for different use cases depending on the prompt you give it. The tool has created a ruckus in the tech world to bring a technological revolution. It has changed the way how content marketers research topics.
ChatGPT is a versatile writing assistant which is best for:
- Users seeking fast content generation for complex topics
- Marketers and editors who want to save time in checking grammar
- Bloggers, content writers, and entrepreneurs who are looking to create a spark in their writing.
Grammarly vs ChatGPT: Which is Better?
Grammarly is a clear winner when it comes to grammar checking and writing assistance. However, ChatGPT and Grammarly are different from each other, and ChatGPT is not exactly a grammar checker. It is a good tool to offer some form of writing assistance but is not close to Grammarly.
Grammarly is a powerful tool with an intuitive on-page grammar checker that generates AI-assisted content while also checking content for plagiarism. It helps you with correctness, engagement, delivery, and more features. This is why I would choose it over ChatGPT.
If you are an avid user of ChatGPT who doesn’t have all the time to go through every grammar alert and requires quick solutions while also requiring prompts for each response, then you should consider ChatGPT.
I avoid copying content from ChatGPT as it doesn’t rank well on Google and only use it to generate ideas to tackle writer’s block. If you do, then it can lead to plagiarism. Overall, I would choose Grammarly with its vast features that give it an edge in the market.
