{"id":647,"date":"2022-11-13T01:00:27","date_gmt":"2022-11-13T01:00:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thinktravelliftgrow.com\/?p=647"},"modified":"2024-04-21T07:31:39","modified_gmt":"2024-04-21T07:31:39","slug":"make-money-traveling","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jeremynoronha.com\/make-money-traveling\/","title":{"rendered":"How To Make Money Traveling As A Digital Nomad"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In April 2016, I left Goa, India after dropping and off college and began traveling the world, ever since that time the most common question I get to this day: \u201c<strong>how do you make money traveling<\/strong>?\u201d or \u201c<strong>how to get paid to travel?<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>This isn\u2019t going to be a clique article writing about 100 of ways that you can make money traveling and include stuff like \u201cbusking\u201d, \u201cpicking fruits in a farm\u201d because let\u2019s me honest, that\u2019s not the kind of life you\u2019re looking for when you follow your favorite Instagram Travel influencer.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>No, this article is on one particular issue: <strong>How can you make money traveling in a way that\u2019s sustainable.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Having dropped straight out of college, I never ever got a &#8220;9-5 job&#8221; nor do I ever plan on. I dropped out mainly because a degree wasn&#8217;t going to help achieve the goals I wanted out of life. Bring Value.<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/li><li class='ez-toc-page-1 ez-toc-heading-level-2'><a class=\"ez-toc-link ez-toc-heading-18\" href=\"https:\/\/jeremynoronha.com\/make-money-traveling\/#Ready_For_The_Digital_Nomad_Lifestyle\" title=\"Ready For The Digital Nomad Lifestyle?\">Ready For The Digital Nomad Lifestyle?<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/nav><\/div>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_Ive_Made_Money_Traveling_Since_2016\"><\/span>How I\u2019ve Made Money Traveling Since 2016<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Before I dive into how YOU can make money traveling, I\u2019ll share a bit about how I made money traveling since 2016 to give you an insight into how someone can make money traveling.<\/p>\n<p>For starters, when I started traveling I didn&#8217;t start out with a lot of\u00a0savings, coming from a middle-class Indian family,<strong>\u00a0I had barely 200$ that I saved over birthdays and Christmas as my startup capital.<\/strong> My goal was to pay for my travels by making money while traveling,\u00a0instead of the usual &#8220;make money, save and then travel.&#8221; that&#8217;s more common<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2520\" src=\"https:\/\/jeremynoronha.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/how-to-make-money-traveling-get-paid-to-travel-1-e1492576550519.jpg\" alt=\"how to make money traveling\" width=\"640\" height=\"402\" \/><br \/>\nEvery day I get so many messages from old friends from high school, they usually go along the lines of <strong>&#8220;OMG! you are so lucky&#8221;<\/strong> and later the questions are always the same<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>&#8220;How exactly do you make money traveling?&#8221; <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>&#8220;How do you make money to pay for your travels around the world?&#8221; <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>&#8220;Are you paid to travel the world?&#8221;<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Before I dropped out of college, I dedicated my free time to develop new skills and I&#8217;m always learning new things thanks to the infinite knowledge available to everyone reading this, it&#8217;s called the internet.<\/p>\n<p>Let me tell you one simple thing, <strong>I&#8217;m not lucky,<\/strong> I worked! I worked countless coffee-fueled nights and weekends doing hundreds of hours of research to learn about how I could make money traveling, while my friends were out partying.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>1. Freelance Website Building<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the process of building my first blog, <strong>I taught myself how to build websites<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Note: I don&#8217;t know to code, I was building super simple WordPress website. This is something you can easily learn over a weekend.<\/p>\n<p>That simple skill of building basic websites was my biggest source of income during the first 6\u00a0months of my travels. <strong>I built websites for Hotels, Cafes, Restaurants, Hostels and also quite a variety of blogs for other people.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I didn&#8217;t get my first clients\u00a0thanks to some \u201csecret\u201d or a \u201chack\u201d but actual hard work. I typed cafe *city name* into Google and made a list of all the cafes, then filtered down to the ones which were active on social media eg Facebook.<\/p>\n<p>Checked off the ones that had a website and finally, I was left with a list of cafes that understood the benefits of marketing on the internet and would benefit from a website.<\/p>\n<p>I would struggle to get clients online as I didn&#8217;t have a portfolio or a degree so now that I had a list, I then went cafe to cafe and tried to convey about how having a website would benefit them. At the end of the day, I had a client.<\/p>\n<p><strong>At the same time, my friends and fans of my blog who now contact me every day who have 10X-100X the level of skill I did are complaining about not being able to get clients.<\/strong>\u00a0I also realized why everyone also had an excuse for why they can\u2019t do something in life.<\/p>\n<p><em>Here I was a kid who didn\u2019t know to code making more money building websites then many computer science graduates.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s about doing the things most people aren&#8217;t willing to do, to live a life most people won&#8217;t ever get to live. <strong>I don\u2019t believe there is a \u00a0\u201csecret\u201d to success it\u2019s smart then hard work<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<p><em>I stopped doing this once my travel blog grew (read below) as I wasn&#8217;t passionate about it and it was more of a means of a way.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>2. Travel Blogging<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In early 2016, I started a travel blog called,\u00a0<strong>Think Travel Lift Grow.<\/strong>\u00a0Eventually I grew it to over 100k monthly users from Google in less than a year and its income was enough to sustain my travel.<\/p>\n<p>Later on I closed down the travel blog and started this new site at JeremyNoronha.com.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I don&#8217;t like ads personally and I didn&#8217;t feel fair to bombard my viewers with them so I never used them on my blog. Instead, when I share my favorite travel gear, books, hotels and other products\u00a0with my readers, I include affiliate tracking links to those products. <em>Meaning if you decide to click-through and buy a product, I\u2019ll receive a small commission. However the great thing is that the price remains the same whether you use my special link or not, I get paid out of the companies cut!<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Most of my affiliate links are for <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/29ws9Mh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Amazon.com<\/a>. Once that started happening I started focusing more of my time on making it bigger and better.<\/p>\n<p>I focused my energy on learning new skills to write better, learning new ideas that would help me grow the blog further and eventually it grew to be a full-time income. I don&#8217;t believe there is a &#8220;secret&#8221; or &#8220;hack&#8221; to success! <strong>It all comes down to Smart and\u00a0then hard work.<\/strong> I have an article that&#8217;s over 6000 words long that shares everything you would need to know about\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jeremynoronha.com\/how-to-start-a-blog\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>How To Start A Blog And Make Money<\/strong><\/a><em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>3. SEO Consulting<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the process of growing my blog I became really good at something called \u201cSEO\u201d. Which is basically getting things to come higher up on Google.<\/p>\n<p>Many of you guys reading this article right now, (yes you! ;) ) Probably Googled \u201cHow to make money traveling\u201d and clicked on this article.<\/p>\n<p>Because I\u2019m good at this \u201cSEO thingy\u201d, I\u2019m usually at the top of Google for most of the things I write about and even beat big travel blogs, online publications and even companies with a huge team :P<\/p>\n<p>Of course, thanks to that I managed to get into some pretty impressive consulting roles. EG. I became the Head of SEO at <strong>Foundr Magazine.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Recently, I quit SEO consulting to just work on my own websites.<\/p>\n<h4>How Much Money Do I Make Traveling The World?<\/h4>\n<p>I know, I know. You want details. Asking someone how much money they make is a very personal question, and it\u2019s not something I\u2019m entirely comfortable posting also a lot of it is confidential haha ;), but I\u2019ll give you an idea.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I have earned over 500$ in a single day, but I also have days when I have earned less than 20$. I make enough to make ends meet and also invest in my future!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I put most\u00a0of my income back into this blog or in starting my other businesses\u00a0in one form or another.<\/p>\n<p>All businesses need investment to grow, including blogs.<\/p>\n<p>I can travel for the rest of my life if I chose to, settle in any country I like\u00a0and work on the go and only need Wi-Fi, my phone or laptop, and Coffee. <strong>Especially Coffee!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The reality is that I actually have no idea how much I\u2019ll make next month. Or the month after that. It\u2019s one downside to working for yourself. In exchange for freedom, you often lose some security.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I\u2019ve chosen freedom over security.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Now, I\u2019m pretty sure many of you reading this are super inspired right?<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Well, in early 2016, I was the guy sitting in the library of my university and Googling the exact same thing you just did.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at all the top bloggers and people traveling the world and realized that &#8220;Alright that&#8217;s great for them, they definitely put in a lot of work to be where they are, now what can I learn from them so that I can do the same?&#8221; Instead of complaining about my circumstance, I believe in taking responsibility and putting in the world.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I believe that anything is possible with hard work, patience, and dedication.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Digital_Nomad_Lifestyle\"><\/span><strong>Digital Nomad Lifestyle<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>I was resistant for a very long time to write an article about &#8220;Digital Nomads&#8221; as there is a lot of bullshit out there in the Digital Nomad community about sitting on the beach doing nothing while having millions pour into your bank account.<\/p>\n<p>Firstly shit like that doesn&#8217;t exist, sorry to burst your bubble and a few people are selling that dream of being a &#8220;digital nomad&#8221; to make a quick buck.<\/p>\n<p>The term \u201cdigital nomad\u201d gets used so much on the internet nowadays and sadly most people get exposed to the term by someone trying to sell them something.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5887\" src=\"https:\/\/jeremynoronha.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/digital-nomad-103.jpg\" alt=\"how to become a digital nomad\" width=\"512\" height=\"640\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Hopefully, this article will actually share some practicality to anyone who is curious about the Digital Nomad Lifestyle and wants to know how they can lead it!<\/p>\n<p>I personally feel like the term \u201cDigital Nomad\u201d is overused way too much and has turned into the equivalent of a teenage kid putting \u201centrepreneur\u201d in their Instagram bio (something I was guilty of years ago lol)!<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Just a quick fact before jumping into what a digital nomad is: Putting &#8216;entrepreneur&#8217; in your Instagram bio won\u2019t magically make you the CEO of a successful business, you still got to hustle and build it!<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4946\" src=\"https:\/\/jeremynoronha.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/what-is-a-digital-nomad-4.jpg\" alt=\"how to become a digital nomad\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_is_a_Digital_Nomad\"><\/span>What is a Digital Nomad?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Well, it\u2019s basically <strong>someone who works online and travels<\/strong>. As mentioned above this statement basically sums up this entire subculture.<\/p>\n<p>According to Wikipedia, <em>&#8220;Digital nomads are people who use telecommunications technologies to earn a living and, more generally, conduct their lives in a nomadic manner. Such workers typically work remotely &#8211; generally from foreign countries, coffee shops, public libraries, coworking spaces and even recreational vehicles &#8211; to accomplish tasks and goals that traditionally took place in a single, stationary workplace.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On social media, Digital Nomads are often portrayed as a typical 20-something-year-old sitting with his MacBook on the beach with a drink in his hand, I mean just Google &#8220;digital nomads&#8221; click on the image tabs and you can see for yourself!\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4949\" src=\"https:\/\/jeremynoronha.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/what-is-a-digital-nomad-1.jpg\" alt=\"how to become a digital nomad\" width=\"640\" height=\"330\" \/><\/p>\n<p>But that couldn&#8217;t be further from the truth! Digital nomads aren\u2019t just the people on Instagram sitting with their laptops on the beach, the diversity of digital nomads is incredible! There are digital nomads over the age of 60 at the same time they are people who started out at 18 like me! It\u2019s not just bloggers or CEOs who are traveling around the world, earning on the go. Digital Nomads come in all shapes and forms.<\/p>\n<p>On the technology-focused side, we have coders, programmers, developers etc. On the creative side, we have writers, authors, designers etc. On the business side, we have day traders, business owners, project managers etc.<\/p>\n<p>On the marketing side, you have everything from social media managers and growth hackers to SEO Consultants like me. The digital nomad community also consists of everything from YouTubers and bloggers to online English teachers and translators.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why did I start out by pointing out the incredible diversity? Because everyone is unique! Not everyone is going to travel the world coding or blogging! Each person has chosen a field and industry based on their skills and interests.<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4943\" src=\"https:\/\/jeremynoronha.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/what-is-a-digital-nomad-7.jpg\" alt=\"how to become a digital nomad\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Similarly, due to the diversity, there is no one first fixed the path of \u201chow to become a digital nomad\u201d!<\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s not possible to make a step by step course on how to become a digital nomad as there is insane diversity and there is no one fixed path to make money traveling.<\/strong> Anyone trying to sell you a course of how to become a digital nomad \u201cexactly\u201d like they are most likely <strong>making his living selling the dream of being a digital nomad instead of creating any actual value.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Find out where in this spectrum you belong as a professional! <strong>What are you good at and what do you like doing?<\/strong> Because the opportunities are endless but if you pick something just because that\u2019s what this <em>digital nomad \u201cguru\u201d<\/em> on the internet told you to do, you\u2019ll probably get sick of it and won\u2019t be willing to put in the work. \u00a0Don&#8217;t even listen to me, think for yourself, I&#8217;m not your guru!<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4947\" src=\"https:\/\/jeremynoronha.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/what-is-a-digital-nomad-3.jpg\" alt=\"how to become a digital nomad\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the same way I feel about content creation and personal branding; I don\u2019t believe everyone should <strong>start a blog<\/strong> like me because some people are better on video while others are better off starting a podcast! You need to find the medium through which you communicate best in, similarly, you need to find what you are good at and like doing!<\/p>\n<p>Maybe you don&#8217;t really want to start a business and would prefer working as a marketing manager for a business! <strong>Just because it&#8217;s glamorous to be a business owner and entrepreneur in pop culture now doesn&#8217;t necessarily mean it&#8217;s the right path for you!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I asked my followers about the biggest questions they had about Digital Nomads and the idea of traveling and working and one topic that came up was the Digital Nomad camps, programs and everything else out there.<\/p>\n<p>Firstly I should let you know that I have friends that run and work in some of the biggest ones out there, however, this is going my unbiased opinion about the Digital Nomad Programs which is going to piss some of them off but it needs to be said.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>I don\u2019t believe these programs are for the majority of people, especially not those just getting started with this lifestyle!<\/em><\/strong> The programs have a lot of benefits that I have to point out like being amazing to meet like-minded people and networking, however, a Reddit user jlengstorf summed up these programs better than I ever can:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI think you have to look at *it* for what it is: a pre-packaged, year-long, working vacation. It&#8217;s not a career development move. It&#8217;s not a launchpad to make you rich or internet famous (though you can ride their coattails to get into all the major sites that talk about remote work). <em><strong>It&#8217;s not a guarantee of a remote job or a way to make money.<\/strong><\/em><br \/>\nSo if you can afford it and the idea of traveling alone freaks you out: do it.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/digitalnomad\/comments\/4i4jil\/truth_behind_remote_year_please_provide_feedback\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Here&#8217;s a link to the whole discussion<\/a>!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I would also add that the overhead of many of these programs is pretty darn high as you can have nearly the same experience by spending half the money or even less, going to a major city with a digital nomad community!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Check out <a href=\"https:\/\/nomadlist.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">NomadList<\/a>, an amazing resource that lists the average price of living in different cities around the world!<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4941\" src=\"https:\/\/jeremynoronha.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/digital-nomad-2.jpg\" alt=\"how to become a digital nomad\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>From the professional perspective of becoming a digital nomad or advancing in your career, these programs might not be the right move for most people. As I mentioned above access your skills and interests and figure out what you like or are good at, <strong>If you are interested in programming, it\u2019s a better allocation of your time and money to go and attend a coding boot camp instead!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Many of these programs are too vague and aren\u2019t necessary for people curious about the digital nomad lifestyle. If you want to become a writer, start writing on Medium and other online publications and network in groups of bloggers and online business owners on Facebook!<\/p>\n<p>There are specific courses on each industry that will let you become good at a certain skill that you can then leverage to earn an income,<strong> you can\u2019t just \u201cbecome a digital nomad\u201d by paying 2k$ a month because that doesn\u2019t mean shit.<\/strong><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4942\" src=\"https:\/\/jeremynoronha.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/what-is-a-digital-nomad-8.jpg\" alt=\"how to become a digital nomad\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Saying you want to \u201cbecome a digital nomad\u201d is like saying you want to become an Olympic medalist.<\/strong> Alright sure, first tell me in which sport are you interested in? I can then direct you towards a coach for that sport, but there is no \u2018olympic medalist coach&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, access your skills and based on the field you choose, focus on coding or design or writing or teaching.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I do have to point out the positives of these programs!<\/strong> The fact is that through these workshops you get exposure to people doing a variety of different things that can expand your mind and it shows you what\u2019s possible, also maybe it&#8217;s not possible to put a price tag on the connections you will make!\u00a0Also as many long term nomads will tell you, it sometimes gets lonely on the road for some people and programs like this provide a community and that\u2019s another key selling point!<\/p>\n<p>But you can achieve the same benefits by going to a major city and heading off to a few coworking spaces or joining local Digital Nomad Facebook groups and attending the meetups.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So what do I think about these programs?<\/strong> They fit the needs of a certain kind of people &#8211; if traveling alone scares you &#8211; if you are afraid to jump into this lifestyle alone and would love a community around you, go for it! Else spend your money and time in getting better at your core skill(s).<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4944\" src=\"https:\/\/jeremynoronha.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/what-is-a-digital-nomad-6.jpg\" alt=\"how to become a digital nomad and travel the world\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_To_Make_Money_Traveling_Outside_the_Internet\"><\/span>How To Make Money Traveling Outside the Internet<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>I always make the claim that you can <strong>get paid to travel<\/strong> the world much more easily than most people think it is.<\/p>\n<p>Before I dive into the actual sustainable ways, let\u2019s dive into the most popular ones often seen shared on travel blogs around the world.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1_Teaching_English_Abroad\"><\/span>1.\u00a0Teaching English Abroad<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>This is one of the easiest types of job to get if you are a native English speaker. Teaching jobs, especially for English are incredibly abundant around the world, especially in Southeast Asia and China. <strong>They pay well, the hours are flexible, the cost of living is low and some schools will pay for your flight over.<\/strong> I have so many friends teaching English in Vietnam and China right now.<\/p>\n<p>The requirements vary from one country to another, but most people can qualify for a reasonably high-paying job with a little preparation. Most English teachers have TEFL, TESOL, or CELTA certification in addition to a college degree. The TEFL certification is the easiest and least expensive to obtain. Courses ranging from 40 to 120 hours are offered online.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.eslcafe.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Dave&#8217;s ESL Cafe<\/a> is your best resource if you want to teach English while traveling.<\/p>\n<p>Some employers will hire teachers who lack credentials, but the pay and benefits won&#8217;t be as high as with the certification.<\/p>\n<p><strong>CONS:\u00a0<\/strong> Teaching English is more of \u201cMake money and travel\u201d strategy instead of \u201cmake money traveling\u201d as in many situations you\u2019re going to have to commit to a single location.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pro Tip:<\/strong> Companies like VipKid allow you to teach English online thus making this more of a possibility for people who want to travel.<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9304 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/jeremynoronha.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/get-paid-to-travel-7.jpg\" alt=\"How to make money traveling the world\" width=\"487\" height=\"319\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_Work_in_a_Hostel\"><\/span>2. Work in a Hostel<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>If you stick to very touristy areas hostels are often looking for staff to work the desk or show the guests around town. If you can speak a language no other staff member can, that\u2019s really going to help you to pull ahead.<\/p>\n<p>You can find hostels jobs pretty much anywhere, particularly places which appeal to backpackers and budget travelers! Even if you aren\u2019t getting paid and just volunteering you will get a free room and saving on accommodation and also maybe food.<\/p>\n<p>Having a working holiday visa will encourage the hostel owners to choose you over others. <a href=\"http:\/\/helpx.net\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Helpx<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"http:\/\/workaway.info\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Workaway<\/a> are used often by a lot of travelers, but it also provides other volunteering opportunities in rural schools, yoga retreats etc.. Network and put yourself out there.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cons:<\/strong> Again you are tied to a single location. Pay for jobs like this are rarely that great and this isn\u2019t the type of job you\u2019d want to brag on Instagram about.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Sell_Your_Service\"><\/span>3. Sell Your Service<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Everyone is good at something and no one can say that &#8220;I\u2019m not good at anything.&#8221; You may be good at let\u2019s say makeup tutorials, I can bet you and I\u2019m sure that I will win the bet every time&#8217; that there is someone out there making a killing and even millions of dollars doing makeup tutorials.<\/p>\n<p>Use your skills and talents to find work. Teach people how to play music or how to dance, cut hair, hula hoop, cook for people \u2014 use whatever skills you have to find a job. There are so many opportunities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Musicians<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Musicians:\u00a0Sing in bars, hostels, hotels, expat\/tourist spots.<\/li>\n<li>Busk on the streets<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Artists<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Paint murals at a hostel or cafe<\/li>\n<li>Sell handmade crafts at local festivals<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Writes<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Write or proofread menus<\/li>\n<li>Translate if you have strong foreign language skills<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>It doesn&#8217;t matter what you are good at if you want it bad enough you will find a way.<\/strong> Sell your service to people who will actually benefit from them, that way you will find it that you don\u2019t mind doing it\u00a0like it\u2019s something you would do for free.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cons: <\/strong>Unless you can do your service online, its highly unlikely that it\u2019ll be scaleable and you\u2019ll be restricted in your travels. (read the freelancing section below)<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_Do_Seasonal_Work\"><\/span>4. Do Seasonal Work<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Whether it&#8217;s the Australian work visa and you are picking vegetables, fruit, flowers or picking up grapes in\u00a0a vineyard in Italy. Farms are always looking to hire seasonal workers. So many of these places require additional help and people during the peak seasons and they usually pay well.<\/p>\n<p>Fruit picking jobs in Australia\u00a0is some of the easiest work to find, but the trade off is that it is also some of the hardest work out there.\u00a0Harvest jobs often pay great, especially if it involves big machinery.<\/p>\n<p>If I couldn&#8217;t work online or if I didn&#8217;t have this blog and I wanted money to travel I would have probably ended up picking fruit in Australia, it&#8217;s amazing to gain some extra cash to extend your trip.<\/p>\n<p>If it&#8217;s diving season and if you are a certified diver and want to become an instructor (additional classes may be needed), there are dozens of huge scuba destinations around the world where you can easily find work. You can always go there and ask around.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wwoof.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">WWOOF<\/a> provides organic farming jobs all over the world.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cons:<\/strong> You have to be at the certain part of the world for a certain time. Falls into the camp of \u201cmake money and then travel)<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5_Start_Busking_or_be_an_instructor\"><\/span>5. Start Busking or be an instructor<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Yoga, Zumba, dance, surfing, diving \u2026 the list is endless. Do you possess any skill and have enough experience in it to teach others? Why not hold classes and make an income as you travel the world! This way you can earn an income doing what you love.<\/p>\n<p>You will have to\u00a0grow\u00a0a thick skin when you begin. But remember that people pay for whatever impresses them, so the more unique and incredible, the larger the income.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve met plenty of travelers who are playing guitar, juggling, dancing and singing their way around the world. It may be illegal in certain\u00a0places\u00a0so be sure to check the rules.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cons:\u00a0<\/strong>Pay isn\u2019t great, unreliable. However, a good experience.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"6_Au_Pair\"><\/span>6. Au Pair<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The word &#8220;Au Pair&#8221; is a French term, which means &#8220;on par&#8221; or &#8220;equal to&#8221;, denoting living on an equal basis in a reciprocal, caring relationship between <b>the host<\/b> family and the children.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s perfect if you love kids, you\u2019ll get a\u00a0room, board and a weekly paycheck for helping take care of a family\u2019s kids, allowing you to explore the country you end up in during your free time as well.<\/p>\n<p>Here are a couple of websites for finding Au Pair jobs:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/aupair.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Au Pair<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/aupairworld.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Au Pair World<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Cons:<\/strong> Tied to a location. Get Paid To Travel and Review Hotels<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>If you run a big Instagram account or have a website with a lot of visitors, hotel, tour companies, tourism boards, and destinations will pay you to visit them.<\/p>\n<p>Even websites like Hotels.com will pay you to travel the world and review hotels. For example, recently Hotels.com was hiring a \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hotels.com\/poolhop\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Poolhop<\/a>\u201d to travel across the country and test the waters at six different hotels, including establishments in Hawaii, Florida, Vegas, L.A., New York, and the non-beach town of Colorado Springs.<\/p>\n<p>However, getting a job like that is pretty much close to winning the lottery and I wouldn\u2019t recommend betting on that. Instead a better bet is to become an \u201cinfluencer\u201d or grow a large audience.<\/p>\n<p>Influencer marketing with destinations and hotels is a great way to get paid to travel and review hotels which is dream for many people.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"8_Working_in_the_Airline_Industry\"><\/span>8. Working in the Airline Industry<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>A year ago, I bumped into a flight attendant in Nepal and it was pretty darn amazing to hear her stories from all around the world. Getting paid to fly the seven seas sounds pretty darn amazing, doesn\u2019t it? However, if you want to make money sustainably over the longer term keep reading on.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_Become_A_Digital_Nomad\"><\/span>How to Become A Digital Nomad<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Become_A_Digital_Nomad_By_Getting_A_Remote_Job\"><\/span><strong>Become A Digital Nomad By Getting A Remote Job<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Pros:<\/strong> Stable Guaranteed Income, Don&#8217;t need to find new clients\/customers and might come with benefits (401k, health insurance etc)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cons:\u00a0<\/strong>Less Freedom and Flexibility (You still have to report to your employer), limited lifetime earning potential.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You don\u2019t really have to quit your job to become a digital nomad as many popular \u201cquit my job to travel the world\u201d articles on the internet will have you believe! <strong>If you work on your laptop and your work could be done with you sitting at home instead of going to an office, you could also do it from a beach in Bali (Okay maybe an air-conditioned cafe by the beach :P)!<\/strong> This obviously won\u2019t apply to all professions as you can\u2019t perform heart surgery from across the world, however, if you work in the tech or business sectors it\u2019s very likely that your job could be performed remotely.<\/p>\n<p>Many times this might mean negotiating with your current employer and other factors however the idea of working remotely is becoming insanely popular with some of the biggest companies choosing to allow their employees work remotely! From Amazon and American Express to IBM!<\/p>\n<p>Remote jobs\u00a0are one of the most popular methods of how digital nomads earn a living, the benefits of being a remote worker is the security of having a fixed monthly income coming in! If you can&#8217;t turn your current job into a remote job, maybe it\u2019s time to apply for a new job that allows you to work remotely.<\/p>\n<p>There are companies like Automattic (the guys behind WordPress.com) that only hire remote workers and there are sites like <a class=\"button\" title=\"FlexJobs\" href=\"https:\/\/flexjobs.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">FlexJobs<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/weworkremotely.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">WeWorkRemotely<\/a> that list remote job offers from companies like these!<\/p>\n<h4>How to Get a Remote Job as a Digital Nomad?<\/h4>\n<p>One way to get remote jobs would be to apply to them from the sites that I&#8217;ll list the resources! Having past work experience is always a plus when applying for a new job!<\/p>\n<p><strong>However, these sites aren&#8217;t the only way to get a remote job!<\/strong>\u00a0They are a great resource and if you have the skill and the credentials for getting a remote job will be a breeze! However, I&#8217;ve had remote job offers by networking in Facebook groups and other places online.<\/p>\n<p>I can&#8217;t stress this enough, <strong>Don&#8217;t don&#8217;t ever spam! You won&#8217;t ever achieve anything by doing that!<\/strong> Bring value to the people you communication and form actual relationships! Later as my portfolio grew I was able to network online and get more clients.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve mentioned this a tons of times on this blog, but freelancing is the easiest in to enter and the path to success as a freelancer is simple. Simple, but requires you putting a lot of hard work.<\/p>\n<p>Take a skill, one that you like or at least are interested in and get good at it! The most popular ones are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.upwork.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Upwork<\/a>, Freelancer and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fiverr.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Fiverr<\/a>. Other than that, there are industry-specific sites like <a href=\"https:\/\/99designs.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">99designs<\/a> for graphic designs, where you can apply for a freelance job in your specific industry!<\/li>\n<li><strong>Network! Form connections and create relationships with people, online and offline!<\/strong> When I started I had to go cafe to cafe and pitch as I was broke and I needed the cash to put food on my plate. However, most people won&#8217;t have to do things to that extent but it&#8217;s just an example to show you that the excuses of not getting clients if usually absolute bullshit!<\/li>\n<li>If you are in a marketing position, use your marketing skills to get more clients. That&#8217;s usually the idea being sold to people, to get them to buy a course or into a system, and shit like that just doesn&#8217;t exist!<\/p>\n<p>There is no magic algorithm or secret that will make millions while you do nothing! Any online business takes a lot of hard work and patience to grow!<\/p>\n<p>With any online business there are only a few ways that you can make an income; \u00a0Create and Sell a product (eg. book, software etc), provide a service (web design, translations etc) or sell advertising (Ads, affiliate marketing etc).<\/p>\n<p>There are a lot of options here from an E-commerce store to a Youtube channel. Here\u2019s my take on it and what I would do\/did. Build a business around on your passion or interests. Why do I say that? Because when you are working on something you love\/like it doesn\u2019t really feel like work.<\/p>\n<p>I would pick an interest and start either a \u00a0service based industry, a Blog, a Youtube channel or a Podcast around it. Why these options? Well not everyone can do all of them, I personally would suck at a podcast right now (have you heard me talk!? if not join me on Facebook Live sometime), but I\u2019m killing it with blogging!<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5886\" src=\"https:\/\/jeremynoronha.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/digital-nomad-102.jpg\" alt=\"how to become a digital nomad and travel the world working remotely\" width=\"512\" height=\"640\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Why start and grow an online business? Well because it can make you money even when you don\u2019t work. Let\u2019s say you upload a video to Youtube and you decide to monetize it by running ads before the video, now if someone watches the ads and the video while you are asleep or even surfing you will earn a small amount. Now, what if a thousand or 10 thousand or a 100 thousand people do that?<\/p>\n<h4>Long-Term Benefits Of Starting An Online Business As A Digital Nomad<\/h4>\n<p>You could talk about Smurfs or whatever you want and make a living doing it. Ads are the easiest form of monetization.
