Taking care of your teeth is important for your overall health. Conditions like diabetes, osteoporosis, HIV/AIDS, and Alzheimer’s disease can also negatively affect your oral health.
Electric toothbrushes are really helpful in keeping your teeth clean and healthy. They have bristles that rotate or vibrate, which helps remove plaque and prevent gum disease and tooth decay better than brushing manually. Many modern electric toothbrushes also have features like timers and pressure sensors, so you know you’re brushing for the right amount of time with the right amount of pressure.
Factors to Consider When Choosing an Electric Toothbrush
Choosing the right electric toothbrush is important for keeping your teeth and gums healthy. There are a few things to think about when picking one:
1. How it brushes: Some toothbrushes move in special ways that help clean your teeth better. They can spin or vibrate fast to get rid of plaque and food bits.
2. Different modes: Electric toothbrushes can have different settings for different needs. Some are gentle for people with sensitive gums, while others can make your teeth look whiter.
3. Smart toothbrushes: Some toothbrushes can connect to your phone using Bluetooth. There are Some apps that can tips on how to brush your teeth better in real-time. It’s like having a personal coach for your teeth!
4. Battery life: Electric toothbrushes now have batteries that last a long time. This means you don’t have to charge them as often, which is great when you’re traveling or using them every day.
5. Pressure sensors: Some toothbrushes have sensors that tell you if you’re brushing too hard. This helps protect your teeth from getting damaged.
6. Size and portability: Electric toothbrushes are getting smaller and easier to take with you when you’re on the go. They’re designed to fit in your bag or suitcase easily.
7. Brand and reviews: It’s a good idea to look for toothbrushes made by trusted brands and read reviews from other people. This can give you an idea of what other users think and how long the toothbrushes last.
8. Price: Decide how much you want to spend and find a toothbrush that has the features you need within that price range.
Choosing the right electric toothbrush is essential for maintaining excellent oral hygiene. To help you make an informed decision in 2023, we’ve compiled a list of the top electric toothbrushes recommended by dental experts.
Best Electric Toothbrushes Reddit
1. Oral-B Pro 1000
The Oral-B Pro 1000 electric toothbrush is a powerful and functional product with a lower price tag that stands out. It has just one daily cleaning mode and a 2-minute timer that signals you to move mouth quadrants every 30 seconds.
I tested the Oral-B Pro 1000 for a week, and it was my favorite product due to its simplicity and impressive cleaning abilities. I hardly had to scrub or brush my teeth on my own, the fast-spinning bristles did most of the work for me. It easily gilded it across my teeth. The smaller brush head also helped me to get to those hard-to-reach places. On top of that, the Oral-B Pro 1000 is ADA-accepted.
- Affordable brush and brush head replacements
- 2-minute brush timer, low battery alert, and pressure sensor
- ADA Seal of Acceptance
- Not as high-tech as Philips Sonicare or iO Series
- Only one brush mode

2. Oral-B iO Series 5
This Oral-B electric toothbrush is similar to other Oral-B brushes, except the bristles on this brush felt softer than the Oral-B Pro 1000. That’s a big bonus for anyone with sensitive gums, as is the real-time coaching that tells you if you’re brushing too hard. The Oral-B iO also has a quieter motor compared with the Pro 1000.
The display offers an impressive amount of information. Based on the lit-up icon, you can easily tell what mode you’re brushing in. The iO has five brush modes, whereas most electric toothbrushes seem to have three or four. You can choose from daily clean, intense clean, whitening, sensitive, and super sensitive. The Oral-B iO Series is also ADA-accepted.
- 3D teeth tracking, smart pressure sensor, and LED indicator lights
- Convenient travel case
- ADA Seal of Acceptance
- On the expensive side
- The more I used this brush, the more I had to charge it
Reddit Reviews:
u/Moonlord_: “I have a soniccare and Oral-b and have always preferred the oral-b due to the brush head. The smaller round head and rotational movement allows for a better tooth by tooth cleaning imo while the larger sonic-care head overlaps multiple teeth and is harder to angle in between teeth and get behind your front teeth and back molars. I like that I can hold the oral-b handle vertically or horizontally without affecting the brush direction/pattern.”
3. Philips Sonicare 9900 Prestige
The Philips Sonicare 9900 Prestige is a lifesaver if you have sensitive gums like me. I sometimes brush too hard, and the Philips Sonicare buzzes and lights up when I press down too hard with the toothbrush — a gentle nudge to let me know to lighten the pressure. The brush also automatically adjusts intensity if you’re pushing too hard.
The Philips Sonicare 9900 Prestige has three different intensity modes and an app that shows your coverage. Similar to the app with the Oral-B iO Series, the display on your phone shows a 3D scan of your mouth and highlights the areas you are missing. The Sonicare app also guides you while brushing, and keeps track of your data, how much you are scrubbing (a big no-no with electric toothbrushes), and the pressure you are applying.
Another great feature of this brush is the reminders. If you have trouble remembering when to replace your brush heads, Philips’ BrushSync technology will tell you how long you’ve been using your brush head. A light on the handle will blink and the Sonic toothbrush will beep, letting you know it’s time to order a new one.
- Pressure sensors automatically adjusts
- Bluetooth capabilities with an impressive app
- Reminds you to replace your brush head
- Not for those who want a rotating brush head
- Expensive
Reddit Reviews:
u/Electric_Teeth: “I would pick the Prestige.
They both clean the teeth very well. I could happily use either on a daily basis.
But, when you consider all the features on offer, the Prestige is the more compelling option.
It is a more complete offering that feels a little more current and considerate of the user.
It depends what is most important to you. Some things the iO does better and some things the Prestige is better for.
If you have only ever used a sonic toothbrush before, it will feel more familiar than the round brush head of Oral-B so less of a transition period.
I would question whether you really need or want such expensive models? Much cheaper brushes that clean the teeth just as well.”
4. Hum by Colgate
Hum by Colgate is a smart toothbrush that I like. It has three modes: normal, sensitive, and deep clean. Every 30 seconds, it buzzes to remind you to move to a different part of your mouth. The charger and carrying case are small and easy to take with you when you travel. You can also choose a rechargeable brush instead of using batteries.
One of the best things about this brush is the app that comes with it. The app tells you how well you’re brushing your teeth. It can be a little discouraging if it says you missed 20% of your mouth, but it also encourages you and gives you rewards for brushing better. It might sound silly, but it made me want to brush better.
- Three different brushing modes
- The app tells you how well you’re brushing
- You can save your brushing data in the Apple Health app
- The brush head is rectangular, which is different from most electric brushes
- The battery doesn’t last as long as some other brushes

u/esksister: The best toothbrush I’ve ever tried
I have always struggled with brushing my teeth. I could never remember to get it done or gather up enough motivation to get it done. I’ve tried a few electric toothbrushes to make my life a little easier by taking some of the manual labor out and by getting a deeper clean when I actually do remember. But every electric toothbrush I’ve had has always been so loud in my head and rough against my teeth, even on the sensitive modes. My dental health is becoming increasingly more important as dry mouth is a symptom of my ADHD medication. Which if you don’t know dry mouth can lead to cavities because saliva isn’t washing the bacteria out between your teeth.
I think I’ve finally found the perfect toothbrush though! It’s called the Colgate hum toothbrush. I have the battery powered one but they make a chargeable one. It connected via Bluetooth to an app on your phone so it tells you exactly how well your cleaning and the correct angle to be brushing your teeth at. I have apparently been brushing my teeth wrong my whole life. It’s also pretty fantastic because it gameifys brushing your teeth. There are a few mini games that you can play while brushing your teeth; your toothbrush acts as the controller. It’s pretty cool. And you can earn points which can go towards getting replacement heads or a new toothbrush (instead of paying money for it).
5. Philips One Rechargeable Toothbrush
The Philips One Rechargeable toothbrush is very gentle and still cleans your teeth well. It’s small and lightweight, which I liked. The brush head is slimmer than other Philips Sonicare brushes but still feels like a regular toothbrush. The bristles are soft and flexible, and the handle is small and light, so it’s easy to hold. It only has one cleaning mode and a timer that turns off the brush after 2 minutes.
The case that comes with this brush is also really good. You can store the brush by flipping it upside down and putting it in the case. The top closes, and it’s ready to go. I’ve taken this brush with me when I traveled, and I chose it because it looks nice, the motor is quiet, and it fits easily in my bag.
- Quiet and great for traveling
- Good for sensitive gums
- Has a 2-minute timer
- Only has one brushing mode
- Doesn’t come with an app to use with it
Reddit Reviews:
u/crimsontongue: “Philips One by Sonicare USB-C version – not quite as strong as the regular pedestal version, but gives a good clean feeling, brushes may not be compatible between them, lightweight, nice travel case. Went 3 weeks without charging (I basically charge it when I get home).
No experience with other travel electrics, but infinitely better then manual.”
6. Oral-B Kid’s Color Changing Electric Toothbrush
The Oral-B Kid’s Color Changing Electric Toothbrush is the best electric toothbrush for kids, in my opinion. The handle is small and perfect for little hands. It has two modes and comes in two colors. Each box also has stickers that you can use to decorate the handle, and it’s waterproof.
The brush head is soft and round, and it moves back and forth to clean your teeth. It’s smaller than the regular Oral-B brush head. There’s a timer that helps kids learn how long to brush their teeth, and the bristles of the brush head change color when it’s time to replace it.
- Small handle and brush head
- Comes in two colors and has stickers to decorate it
- Has a 2-minute timer
- The battery doesn’t last as long as adult Oral-B brushes
- Replacing the brush head is more expensive than for adults
These electric toothbrushes stand out in 2023 for their innovative features, advanced technology, and recommendations from dental professionals. When choosing the right one for you, consider your specific oral care needs, budget, and personal preferences. Remember, consistent and thorough brushing with any of these top electric toothbrushes will contribute to a healthier smile.
