I am 250lbs and a side sleeper. I find it to be medium-firm/firm which I like. I have not been strict on rotating my mattress around, so my bed has developed a bit of a dip. it is not noticeable to the eye, but when I am in bed I notice it’s softer where I always sleep.

Sleep Innovations is known for its high quality midrange mattresses. The company sells 6 mattresses: Marley, Shiloh, Hudson, Quinn, Ellis, and Skyler. Sleep Innovations Marley is the cheapest mattress option and features a gel layer. It’s also not very durable. Sleep Innovations Shiloh doesn’t feature a gel layer, and is still more expensive. However, it is made of better materials and made to last longer. The Sleep Innovations Shiloh mattress is an all foam mattress, and further comes in two variants: the 12 inch variant and the 14 inch variant.

The mattress comes in 5 sizes: Twin, Full, Queen, King, and California King. For the 12 inch variant, the mattress starts at $369 for the Twin size variant and goes up to $549 for the California King variant. If money isn’t a problem for you, and you want the absolute best mattress money can possibly buy, go for a Tempur Pedic. Tempur Pedic mattresses are known for being incredibly expensive, and the cost may not be justifiable for a vast majority of people. However, Tempur Pedic mattresses last very long, and are all medically tested. If you have some serious back issues, Tempur Pedic might be the best option for you. Tempur Pedic sells 3 mattresses: the Tempur Pedic Adapt series, the Tempur Pedic Breeze series, and the Tempur Pedic Cloud Prima. The Tempur Pedic Adapt has further three categories: the standard Adapt, ProAdapt, and LuxeAdapt.

The Tempur Pedic ProAdapt mattress comes in 4 different variants in terms of firmness: Soft, Medium Hybrid, Medium, and Firm. The mattress comes in 6 sizes: Twin, Twin Long, Full, Queen, King, and California King. For the King and California King mattresses, you also have a split variant and a regular variant. Split variants of these mattresses split these mattresses into two halves, so that you choose the firmness for each of the sides separately. This is especially useful when you sleep with a partner who has a different preference for firmness in a mattress than you do. “I had one of the old school TPs. You know, the big block of foam with a brown cover from the infomercials with a lady jumping on the bed without spilling the wine? It wasn’t the very first model, but it was from before TP’s line exploded to what it is now.

I paid about $2,500 or so for a queen, I think. I had it for at least 12-13 years. Much to my regret I did not use a waterproof mattress cover on top of the cover they provide, and I think that caused it to break down faster than it otherwise would have. And it was hot as a MoFo and impossible to move.

But I also slept better than I ever had. I loved that bed, and I found it worth every penny that I paid for it, even though it didn’t hold up for the 20 years I had heard.

So I feel that one was worth its price. These days a TP is SO much more expensive. They have priced me out at this point. My wife and I had an expensive sterns and foster that was good for about five or six years, then bought a sealy posterpedic (based on Consumer Reports recommendations) that started sagging within first year (wife is ~120 pounds and I’m 185). Was super frustrated with the Sealy experience because there’s no reason it should have been sagging so early. Ponied up for the Tempurpedic because of reputation and seemingly strong warranty support. Tempurpedic is really comfortable and is holding up really well – still feels like new. “I am a side sleeper and just got a new mattress. Purple Hybrid 4 was the most recommended of the “new mattress companies” but I couldn’t bring myself to spend $4,000 on a mattress I had never tried.

I went with my original choice from all the years I’ve been contemplating, and got a Tuft & Needle Mint. I’m not very heavy so I added a topper and squishy pad, and I absolutely love it. At some point I am going to go back to just the mattress and try with knit sheets directly on the mattress, because any pad or cotton sheet adds just a bit too much firmness for me.

“I got the tuft & needle mint mattress and it’s very good if you like a firmer mattress. Have used it for 2 years now and no divot at all (and I’m 250+lbs). I had a bed-in-a-box previously that also developed a bad divot within the first year that got worse over time. So at least so far, the T&N seems to be holding up a lot better. It is definitely on the firmer side of the spectrum, though. It also doesn’t sleep hot – that would be a dealbreaker for me as I can’t stand a hot & sweaty feeling while trying to sleep.

Amerisleep is a very straightforward brand. No complex names for mattresses or hyped up names for simple features. It straight up hands you over the options to get a memory foam mattress. Amerisleep memory foam mattress has 5 variants: AS1, AS2, AS3, AS4, and AS5. AS1 is the firmest and AS5 is the softest, with the rest transitioning from firm to soft. The mattress comes in 6 sizes: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, and California King.

The AS5 mattress has a Celiant cover, which Amerisleep claims is an advanced fabric made of 13 thermoactive minerals. The mattress is 14 inches thick.

“Looking at memory foam mattresses, those are usually the best certifications you can find. There will always been some form of VOCs and flame retardants with them, but those certifications definitely minimize them. Just be careful, as they won’t ever be nonexistent in memory foam beds, so consider this if you’re really sensitive to them.

With the fiberglass, however, everything I’m seeing about the brand is that they have zero fiberglass, which is good! (I always double check what customer service says if I can; the mattress business is all marketing nowadays).

The only thing I can say is take note of things when you get the mattress, even with those certifications. The biggest thing is the smell. If the mattress has a really strong smell that needs to “air out” over a period of time, that’s VOCs you’re smelling. They never stop airing out, but you get used to the smell and don’t notice it anymore after some time. This is really common with memory foam.

If fiberglass is the biggest concern, Amerisleep should suffice for you, but with VOCs and flame retardants, you will find those in every memory foam mattress to some degree. Those certifications definitely minimize them, but do not fully eliminate them, so if you’re really sensitive, memory foam may not be the best option.
