TLDR: If you’re in a hurry the Dyson Purifier Humidify+Cool Formaldehyde is the Best Air Purifiers according to reddit!

The VOC sensor doesn’t seem to specify units but the graph trend matches what my sensor plus sees. The PM readings are about the same and they display exact units.
The formaldehyde filter seems to be doing its job… I didn’t know I had formaldehyde on my house but after ~8 hours of running the unit seems to have reduced it to 0 in my room (used to be 0.3mg/m^3 which apparently isn’t great).
Now, speaking of the filtration of the unit itself. I’m running it on a relatively small room, around 25m^2 or 270sqft, I can get PM readings of 0 and 1 constantly when running it at max settings, if it’s on auto mode the levels fluctuate between 1 and 4, this makes sense as the unit doesn’t seem to be very aggressive when pm levels are below 10.
Does it move a ton of air? Definitely not, I think my winix moves a lot more air and costs 1/4 of this unit.
Would I justify the retail price of ~$800? Never if all you care about if air purification, however, as a combo unit for dry areas + decent sensors, it seems to be good enough, possibly a good deal”

How Do Air Purifiers Make the Air Better?
Air purifiers are like superheroes for the air in your room. They have a cool job: making the air you breathe cleaner and better. But how do they do it? Let’s take a simple look at how these machines work.
Step 1: Air Circulation
Air purifiers have a fan that sucks in the air from your room. It’s like when you use a straw to drink your favorite juice, but in reverse.
Step 2: Filtration
Inside the air purifier, the air meets some special filters. Think of these filters like sponges that soak up bad stuff in the air. There are different types of filters. Some are great at catching tiny things like dust and pollen, while others are like odor detectives, getting rid of stinky smells.
Step 3: Getting Rid of Bad Stuff
Each filter has a mission. Some catch tiny things, and others handle smelly stuff. It’s like having different superheroes with different powers.
Step 4: Extra Superpowers (Optional)
Some air purifiers have a bonus power – UV light. This light quietly fights off germs and mold when they pass through the purifier. It’s like having a secret weapon.
Step 5: Making the Air Fresh
After the air goes through all this cleaning, it comes out of the purifier as super clean and fresh air. It’s like the air gets a spa treatment before you breathe it.
Air purifiers can be used in homes, schools, and other places. To pick the perfect one for you, think about what you need. Is it for allergies, smoke, or just making the air nicer? Also, consider how big your room is and how often you’ll need to change the filters. That way, you’ll find the best air purifier for your needs.
Different Kinds of Air Purifier
Air purifiers come in different kinds, like superheroes with special powers to clean the air. Let’s meet these air-cleaning heroes:
1. HEPA Air Purifiers
These heroes use something called HEPA filters to catch tiny stuff like dust, pollen, and pet fuzz. HEPA filters are like super magnets for these tiny things.
2. Activated Carbon Filters
These heroes are like odor detectives. They catch bad smells, smoke, and something called VOCs (which are like invisible stink-makers) and lock them away.
3. UV-C Purifiers
Imagine these heroes as lightsabers that fight off germs, like the ones that make you sick. They use special UV light to do the job.
4. Ionic Air Purifiers
These heroes release tiny charged particles into the air. They act like magnets, attracting and trapping lousy stuff. But watch out, some of them can make too much ozone, which isn’t good.
5. Ozone Generators (Tricky Ones)
These heroes use ozone gas to fight smells and germs. But too much ozone can be harmful to your health, so they’re a bit controversial.
6. Electronic Air Purifiers
Think of these heroes as zappers for big particles in the air. They’re good at catching larger stuff but not so great with the small things.
7. Hybrid Air Purifiers
These heroes are like a team of superheroes working together. They combine different powers, like HEPA filters and UV-C light, to clean the air in many ways.
So, which hero do you need? It depends on what you want to clean from the air. For allergies, pick HEPA and activated carbon heroes. If you’re worried about germs, go for the UV-C heroes. Just remember to think about the size of your room, how often you’ll need to change filters, and if any of these heroes might cause problems for your health. That way, you’ll find the perfect air-cleaning hero for you.
Things to Think About Before You Buy An Air Purifier
When considering buying an air purifier, there are a few important things to think about. Let’s explore some additional factors that can help you make an informed decision.
1. Room Size: Before purchasing an air purifier, it’s essential to consider the size of the room where you plan to use it. Different air purifiers have different coverage areas, so you’ll want to choose one that can effectively clean the air in your specific room size.
2. Air Quality Concerns: Identify the specific air quality concerns you have. Are you looking to reduce allergens like pollen and pet dander? Or do you need to eliminate odors or harmful chemicals? Understanding your specific needs will help you select an air purifier with the right filters and features to address those concerns.
3. Filter Types: Air purifiers use different types of filters to capture and remove pollutants from the air. The most common types are HEPA filters, activated carbon filters, and pre-filters. HEPA filters are excellent for capturing small particles, while activated carbon filters are effective against odors and chemicals. Some air purifiers even offer specialized filters for specific pollutants like formaldehyde or smoke.
4. Noise Level: Consider the noise level of the air purifier, especially if you plan to use it in a bedroom or office space. Look for models that have a quiet or sleep mode, which reduces the fan speed and noise level while still maintaining effective air purification.
5. Energy Efficiency: Check the energy efficiency rating of the air purifier. Choosing an energy-efficient model can help you save on electricity costs in the long run while reducing your environmental impact.
6. Maintenance and Filter Replacement: Find out how often the filters need to be replaced and how easy it is to access and replace them. Some air purifiers have indicator lights that let you know when it’s time to change the filters, making maintenance more convenient.
7. Budget: Set a budget for your air purifier purchase. Air purifiers come in a range of prices, so it’s important to find one that fits within your budget while still meeting your air quality needs.
8. Additional Features: Consider any additional features or functionalities that may be important to you. Some air purifiers come with built-in air quality sensors that automatically adjust the fan speed based on the detected pollutants. Others may have programmable timers or remote controls for added convenience. Think about what features would enhance your experience and make using the air purifier more convenient for you.
9. Portability and Placement: Think about where you plan to place the air purifier and whether you need a portable or stationary unit. If you want to move it around different rooms, a lightweight and portable option would be ideal. Additionally, consider the size and design of the air purifier to ensure it fits well in your chosen location.
10. Warranty and Customer Support: Check the warranty offered by the manufacturer and the availability of customer support. A reliable warranty can provide peace of mind in case of any issues with the air purifier. It’s also helpful to read customer reviews and ratings to get an idea of the manufacturer’s reputation for customer service.
11. Energy Consumption: Look for air purifiers with an energy-efficient design. Energy-efficient models can help reduce electricity costs and have a lower environmental impact. Look for air purifiers with an Energy Star certification, as they meet strict energy efficiency guidelines.
12. Long-Term Costs: Consider the long-term costs associated with owning an air purifier. This includes the cost of replacement filters and how frequently they need to be replaced. Some air purifiers have filters that last longer or offer filter subscription services, which can help you save time and money in the long run.
13. Brand Reputation: Research the reputation of the brand and manufacturer. Look for well-established brands known for producing high-quality air purifiers. Reading customer reviews and checking ratings can give you insights into the reliability and performance of the brand’s products.
By taking these additional factors into account, you can make a more comprehensive evaluation of the air purifiers available and choose the one that best fits your needs, budget, and preferences. Remember, investing in a good air purifier can greatly improve the air quality in your home and contribute to a healthier living environment.

Reddit Reviews:
u/[deleted]: The ‘Cool’ function that comes with the purifier ONLY recirculate the air inside a room, if you do not turn on your A/C and close all your windows, you will ONLY recirculate the air within a room with purified air, your room temperature will eventually raise up if you do not turn on any A/C or furnace. There is no temperature control for the ‘Cool’ function.
The ‘Heat’ function has temperature control, which can help the purifier to stop heating the room infinitely like the traditional space heater, lower the power consumption when the setpoint has been met. Note that if the setpoint is higher than the detected temperature, the heated purified air will be blown to the front if you select Auto fan speed mode; when the setpoint has been met, the purifier will automatically change the airflow to backward. If you will place it in the bedroom with the ‘Heat’ mode on, you may need to consider this as well.

Reddit Reviews:
u/RatioIllustrious302: Coway is very quiet apart from the top level which isnt needed for long in eco mode as it cleans the air quickly
u/UncleGurm: I grabbed an Airmega 250 on super sale on Amazon ($215ish). I’ve had it for a couple months. Not long enough to change a filter, although I bought a spare set.
What makes it better than other models? Well, it has all the right features:
The right kind of filters in the right order: external grille, internal removable washable screen, carbon filter with pellets and sufficient media to reduce VOCs, HEPA.
The filters are high quality and reasonably priced. Not cheap, but not outrageous $65-$70 for that much carbon and a green HEPA with foam seals? Far far better than Honeywell where you pay $90-$100 for three little HEPA filters and a piece of carbon-coated polyester fiber. A little more than Winix, though, which is at around $50 for filter replacement.
More CFM/CADR than pretty much any other unit in its class.
Even on high it’s pretty quiet.
Really well built – far more solid high quality feel, better materials, better design.
Now, it’s not perfect. The particle sensor is still the “meh” kind in every other Coway – c’mon you aren’t going to get a $1000 particle sensor on a $300 air purifier. And it only has 3 speeds.
But it cleans the air well, moves a lot of volume, and has the right filters.
One REALLY good feature is that it either actually has an airflow sensor, or somehow has a magic algorithm regarding filter cleaning. I get an alert to clean the prefilter screen FAR more often than on any other air purifier I’ve owned (and I’ve owned a lot) and every time it goes off I find out that a ton of cat hair has actually coated a couple panels of the screen. So I suspect it’s legitimately measuring air flow (or else it just goes off weekly and I’ve lost track of the days as they pass).
5. Blueair Blue Pure 411 Air Purifier
The Blueair Blue Pure 411 Air Purifier is a really good machine that cleans the air in your home. Even though it’s small, it works well.

It’s really easy to use too. You can change the filters easily and there’s just one button to control it. You don’t need to be a tech expert to have clean air in your home.
And the best part is, it’s really quiet. You won’t even notice it’s there because it doesn’t make any loud noises. You can enjoy clean air without any annoying sounds.
Not only is it a good price to buy, but it’s also cheap to run. It doesn’t use a lot of energy and the filters last a long time, so you don’t have to spend a lot of money to keep it running.
6. Shark 3-in-1 Air Purifier, Heater, and fan with NanoSeal HEPA
The Shark 3-in-1 Air Purifier, Heater & Fan with NanoSeal HEPA is a cool machine that does three important things. It’s not just an air purifier; it’s also a heater and a fan. That means it can keep you comfortable all year round.
The best part is the NanoSeal HEPA filter. It’s like a super filter that can catch even the tiniest particles, like dust, allergens, and bad smells. So the air in your home will be really clean and fresh.
This machine is really smart too. It has something called Cleansense IQ that can sense how clean the air is and adjust itself to make sure it stays that way. It’s like having a smart helper that knows exactly what to do.
And guess what? It can even get rid of bad smells. The Odor Lock feature makes sure your home always smells nice and clean.
Using the Shark 3-in-1 is easy. It has simple controls that you can use to change the temperature or how strong the fan blows. You can make it just the way you like it.
A lot of people like this machine. It has a high rating and people say great things about it. They trust it to work well and do a good job.

Reddit Reviews:
u/RogaineWookiee: Oh, wow, my time to shine!!
So I actually own both of those Honeywell’s, and use the air filter in front of a box fan method as others have posted!
First things first, the larger Honeywell unit uses 3 of Honeywell’s HEPA filters, where as the smaller unit only accommodates 2. Not only that, but the larger unit can accept Honeywell’s newest type of filter (this is not needed to make it function as a HEPA filter, it’s simply a new add on filter) that targets specific odor/allergen sources!
I’m a heavy cannabis user(legal state, legally permitted, legally growing our own) and We utilize the additional smoke targeted filters (from what I can tell it’s just activated carbon inserts…) We smoke heavily, many many blunts a day, indoors! I’m talking 10-15+, and the combo of those two Honeywell’s and the 20” box fan filter can clear a room of ~1100sqft overnight (I guess the HVAC filter helps a bit too).
Now, they claim their filters will last a year, and at their price point (like $20-$30 a pop, and keep in mind you’ll need 2 for the smaller unit and 3 for the larger) they had better! Honestly tho, they can add up fast! With our heavy heavy usage we change ours 4 times a year, that’s 5 of their filters 4 times a year, at $20+ a pop… the pre-filter is much cheaper but needs more frequent changing, but is honestly pretty cheap.
I like them tho, the auto mode is neat, but they can be loud when turned on “turbo” so I leave them on “low” (they don’t actually use “turbo/high/med/low” as their speeds… but they have four speeds..) all day and they are virtually silent, then when we sleep and are not utilizing the man cave I’ll switch them onto turbo and they do their work!
I dunno, they cost a bunch in the long run but they let me smoke where I game/chill/relax and keep my house not smelling like crazy, so I think it’s a worthy cost for what they do.
ETA: oh! And they are kinda large! But that 211 looks large too, so you seem to know what you’re in for!
In addition, I have somewhere around 10 different air filters/filter systems in my house (HVAC, pets, pot, smoke.. and two heavy allergy sufferers) if that helps any

Reddit Reviews:
u/ManufacturerOk8154: I own one and I sorta love it, but it has a few quirks. A few weeks after I got it a new firmware update was available to 3.0.1 and since then it started to act up in HomeKit. After a while it couldn’t be controlled trough HomeKit and had to power cycle it a couple of times to get it to work again. Multiple times a day. I was able to roll back to 1.0.7 and that works way better, so if you get it don’t update to 3.0.1 if it isn’t loaded yet.
But one thing that’s also strange is that it turns itself off randomly. Sometimes a couple of times a days and other days not at all. But I rather have that than have to power cycle it a dozen of times a day!

Reddit Reviews:
u/MoTrek: Bissell seems to be the clear winner.
It has a PM2.5 sensor, and it has carbon pellets instead of a carbon-treated prefilter.
Also, the replacement filters for a Honeywell HPA300 are awkward. That model requires three HEPA filters and Honeywell mostly just sells them in packs of 2 (awkward) and when I owned a similar model, Honeywell didn’t even sell prefilters that were cut to the correct size, you had to cut them yourself.
A quick google shows that the replacement filters for the Bissell are very affordable.
